Pair Chinese Qing Ancestor Portrait Painting Mandarin Official Wife
item#: 1378931
price: SOLD
Pair of late Qing dynasty Chinese ancestor portraits executed in ink and color on paper depicting a civil official and his wife. Each figure is seated on a draped armchair over a floral rug and is dressed in formal attire. A Mandarin rank badge showing the husband’s rank in the civil bureaucracy is on the center front of his purple-blue fur lined outer coat. The bird appears to be a wild goose, indicating an official of the 4th rank. The male official wears a hat with a bright blue stone insignia (consistent with a fourth rank official), a long court necklace of semi-precious stones around his neck, and Manchu boots. A blue dragon robe with gilt embroidery is visible beneath the surcoat. The wife is adorned with jewelry and wears an elaborate phoenix headdress. A green and blue pleated skirt is visible below her red robe designed with gilt four-clawed dragon among clouds. An elaborate xia pei vest with a central Mandarin rank badge incorporated reaches below the knees and ends in fringe. The design is characteristic of late Qing xia pei vests. In characteristic style, her hands and feet are hidden. Frame size: 58 1/2” x 32 1/4.” Late 19th to early 20th century. The portraits were framed in Oklahoma City around 1936-1938. They have not been examined out of the frames but appear to be visibly in very good overall condition with minor soiling and worm damage evident. From the collection of a Phoenix, Arizona woman in her 90s. She has owned the paintings since the 1930s.
