Japanese Kappa-ban Stencil Print Yoshitoshi Mori Goro in Rain Kabuki
item#: 1062493
price: SOLD
Japanese limited edition sosaku hanga “kappa-ban” (stencil print) by Yoshitoshi Mori (1898-1992) titled “Goro in the Rain” (“Ame no Goro”) dated 1980. This boldly colorful kabuki theater image features an actor portraying Soga Goro, one of two historic samurai brothers who avenge the death of their father. In this image, Soga Goro is dressed in fine clothing and holds an umbrella though no rain is evident. He is apparently travelling to the pleasure quarter to visit a courtesan. The rain and the umbrella allude to a kabuki love scene, or “nuregoto,” which means literally “moist business.” The print is pencil-signed “Y. Mori” at the lower left, with the artist’s red seal above. It is dated ’80 and numbered 27/70. The lower edge of the paper also contains the title. The paper measures 22 ¼”V x 13 5/8”H. This print is in very good overall condition. There is very faint evidence at the edges where it had been previously matted. Four small pieces of masking tape adhere to the tips of the corners. This print is illustrated in a catalogue published by the artist in 1985 titled “Mori Yoshitoshi Kappa-ban” which features prints dated between 1977-1985. This image was purchased in Japan and is from a Scottsdale, Arizona collection.
