Large Qing dynasty scrolled painting on paper depicting the Bhaisajyaguru Buddha, also known as the Medicine Buddha or the Buddha of Healing, seated in the lotus position on a lotus throne holding a pearl in the left hand and making a mudra with the right hand. His robe is decorated with four-clawed dragons. A remarkably similar painting can be found in an exhibition of a private collection of Taiwanese traditional religious books and paintings on the web site of The Taiwan Institute for the Humanities at National Chung Cheng University. The scrolled size is approximately 76” long by 35 ½” wide; the painting size is about 55” long by 31” wide. According to the collector, the painting was remounted in Hong Kong several years ago. The mounting is in good, sound condition. The painting has a few horizontal creases in the paper and there are signs of wear, paper losses, and old repairs, particularly in the top section. This painting is from a Scottsdale, Arizona collection.
