Oversized Japanese Kappa-ban Stencil Print Sadao Watanabe Noah's Ark
item#: 1322252
price: $1,500.00
Oversized Japanese limited edition “kappa-ban” (stencil print) by Sadao Watanabe (1913-1996) titled "Noah's Ark.” The predominantly black and white composition is divided into five horizontal rows featuring pairs of animals and four figures disembarking from Noah's Ark onto dry land. Noah and his wife are at the top. The scene is set against a bold red background and is executed on the crumpled hand-made momigami paper characteristic of the artist's work. Signed "Sadao Watanabe," dated 1971, and numbered 13/50 in white ink at the bottom. Paper: 41 3/4"V x 29 3/4"H (image area: 38 1/2"V x 27 1/4"H). Very good overall condition. The images suggest the print is misshapen, but that is a distortion from the photography. Sadao Watanabe used traditional Japanese folk-art techniques and a limited palette of natural pigments to depict Christian themes. From a Tucson, Arizona estate.
