Japanese Meiji Satsuma Earthenware Tripod Koro or Vessel Samurai
item#: 1331267
price: SOLD
Japanese Meiji period (1868-1912) Satsuma earthenware compressed bombe form tripod koro (incense burner) or vessel with wide, inward curling cobalt mouth, decorated with two opposing figural panels, one featuring samurai and the second with women and children of the nobility engaged in leisure activities. The panels are set against a cobalt blue background with dense gilt geometric and floral motifs. 6 1/2” diameter, 4 1/4” high. Late 19th to early 20th century. Very good overall condition. The gold mark to the base is rubbed and unreadable. The vessel might once have had a lid, however, there is no edge where the lid would have rested. The cobalt extends completely to the edge of the rounded lip and there is no indication of any wear to it. This vessel is from an old Scottsdale, Arizona collection.
