Massive Japanese Meiji period Kyoto Satsuma earthenware deep scalloped rim bowl with 17 lobes densely painted on the interior and exterior with a profusion of gilt and enamel flowers. Four-character Kinkozan tsukuru mark with Shimazu crest to the base. Very heavily potted (weighs over 8 lbs.). Dates circa 1890 - 1910. 11 7/8” diameter by 7” high. Nicely carved wood stand included. Very good overall condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. There is some minor typical rubbing of the overglaze enamels and gilt evident. There is an original small firing flaw to the foot rim. An example of this type of decoration is on page 129 of “Imari, Satsuma and other Japanese Export Ceramics” by Nancy Schiffer. A similar example sold at Christie’s Zurich on Feb 19th 2007 as lot 25, Sale 1352: The Avo Krikorian Collection. The Yabu Meizan workshop was also known to utilize this dense millefleur decoration extensively and at the same time period as illustrated on pages 119-131 of “Splendors of Meiji: Masterpieces from the Khalili Collection.” From an old Tucson, Arizona collection. The current owner received the bowl as a gift from a friend who inherited it from his mother. It had been in the same family collection in Duluth, MN since at least the 1930s.
