Tibetan thangka depicting Amitayus, the Buddha of Longevity, seated cross-legged on a variegated lotus throne with hands in the lap in dhyana mudra holding the pot of amṛta, the nectar of immortality. A halo surrounded by flowers is behind the figure and green mountains and water are in the background. The figure wears only a lower garment and is adorned with bracelets, armlets, earrings extending from elongated ears, a beaded necklace, and a high five-pointed crown in front of hair that is stacked and tied. At the top corners, two lamas are seated on floating green clouds. The horsemen at the bottom corners are the heavenly kings of the north and south (Vaisravaṇa with the victory banner and Viruḍhaka with the sword. the goddess Sarasvati is between them. 19th century. Canvas: 34 3/4" x 24” (frame: 44” x 33”). Very good overall condition. There are typical signs of wear from age, including cracks and scratches in the canvas. There are a few small areas of in-painting. The thangka is fully mounted to a firm backing and is framed without glass.
