Large Japanese Meiji period Imari porcelain deep bowl likely produced for New Year's celebration purposes in the Year of the Rabbit . A central roundel is bordered in an underglaze blue comb pattern band. It features an overglaze enameled Ship of Good Fortune (takarabune), which is laden with treasures and is known to carry the Seven Gods of Good Luck into port at New Year’s. The exterior and interior sides are decorated in underglaze blue and overglaze polychrome enamels and gilt highlights with six alternating reserves of Heian style beauties with long black hair seated behind curtains and long-eared rabbits diving into waves (a symbol of immortality) set against a faintly crackled white porcelain ground. The foot rim is bordered in underglaze blue with the “xoxo” pattern. Late 19th century. 9 5/8” diameter x 3 3/4” high. Very good overall condition with minor wear to the gilt and pigments.
