Japanese ink and color on silk genre painting with gilt highlights depicting the emperor and empress seated on a raised mat with tied curtains above revealing blossoming trees in the background. Five musicians from the imperial orchestra are performing below them on a taiko drum, a smaller kakko drum, pipes (sho), a flute (oteki), and the fife (fue). 19th century. This painting is nearly identical to a hanging scroll by Magawa Iitsu in the collection of the British Museum dated 1800-1880 (museum number 1881-1210-0-241). 19th century. 17 3/4" x 24 1/2" (including small silk border); nearly 16 5/8” x 24 3/16" (image). Silk cracks, buckling, and losses with inpainting evident. Reverse toned and with old repairs. Minor soiling and pigment losses. Tucson, Arizona collection
