Paul Jacoulet Japanese Woodblock Print Old Ainu Lady Hokkaido
item#: 1494919
price: $800.00
Japanese limited edition woodblock print by French artist Paul Jacoulet (1902-1960) titled "Old Ainu Lady. Chikabumi. Hokkaido. Japan" (Vielle Aino) published October 28, 1950. A full page color illustration of this print is on page 35 (plate 109) of “The Prints of Paul Jacoulet” by Richard Miles, 1982. It is described on pages 113. The print is pencil-signed and bears the red owl seal to the right of the lady's head. The seal of the carver and printer (Maeda/Uchikawa) is at the lower right margin corner. A red seal verso holds an edition number 96/350 (less than 250 were printed). The 'PJ' watermark is at the lower left margin. The title is at the right side of the bottom margin. Paper: 18 1/2" x 14 1/16" (image: 15 3/8” x 11 13/16”). Very good clean overall condition with mica highlights in the background. The image is slightly sunstruck and faded with a line evident where the previous mat ended. There is some toning to the back and margin edges. A tiny spot of tape stain residue is at the top back edge. Two tiny paper drying holes are in the right margin.
