Chinese Qing Silk Embroidered Nine 5-clawed Dragon Robe
item#: 327446
price: SOLD
19th century (Qing Dynasty) Chinese Manchu style robe embroidered in gold couched threads highlighted in copper and blue-grey metallic threads with 8 visible 5-clawed dragons, plus one hidden dragon on the inside flap, depicted in full-face and profile poses against a blue ground. Each dragon is chasing a flaming pearl (symbolizing the Buddhist notion of enlightenment) and is surrounded by clouds and various auspicious symbols. The dragon's eyes are accented in blue, black, and white polychrome threads. An embroidered panel edged with a blue brocade trim which surrounds the neckline is filled with additional dragons running across the top of waves. The bottom of the robe is decorated in the traditional pattern of waves, stylized mountains and diagonal bands of upright water (li shui) permeated with auspicious symbols. The traditional sleeve extension is in a contrasting brown ground and ends in a black ground horsehoof cuff edged with the blue brocade trim. The robe features the standard side-fastening overlapping closure with metal buttons. It is unlined except for the sleeves and neckline. It measures approximately 82" from sleeve tip to sleeve tip and 53" in length. The robe is in very good overall condition. There are a few loose threads st the shoulder and armpit areas and along the sleeve extensions. There is one small 3/4" tear at the top of the center back slit (see enlargement 10). The lining is in very good condition with some soiling evident at the wrists.
