Qing Dynasty (19th century) Chinese Manchu style robe decorated in embroidered dragons chasing flaming pearls (symbolizing the Buddhist notion of enlightenment) executed in gold-couched thread on a blue silk ground. The eight full-face and profile four-clawed dragons are surrounded by clouds and various auspicious symbols. The dragon's eyes are accented in black and white. An embroidered panel surrounding the neckline is filled with additional dragons running across the top of waves. The bottom of the robe is decorated in the traditional pattern of waves, stylized mountains and diagonal bands of upright water (li shui) permeated with auspicious symbols. The traditional sleeve extensions are woven in a contrasting maroon colored ground. The robe features the standard side-fastening overlapping closure with five metal buttons. It measures approximately 82" from sleeve tip to sleeve tip and 43" in length. The robe is in very good, extremely clean condition. It is unlined and the side seams have been reinforced with what appears to be remnants from sections of other robes (see enlargements 11 and 12). There are a few loose threads, but no stains or tears. Provenance: This robe from a local Tucson collection was purchased in China prior to World War II. It has been very well cared for by the same family since that time.
