Oban diptych by Taiso Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) titled “The Story of the Strong Woman Takashima Oiko of Omi Province” from the series "A New Selection of Eastern Brocade Pictures." The print depicts Takashima Oiko leading Saeki Urinaga home in an effort to strengthen him for a wrestling match. The artist's signature and Taiso seal are at the lower left. The lower left margin contains the date of "Meiji 22" (1889). The title cartouche is at the upper right. Published by Tsunashima Kamekichi. This print is from a Meiji period album which was purchased in a hotel gift shop in Japan in the late 19th century. The album remained in Arizona collections where it was rarely viewed and the prints were not exposed to sunlight. The colors remain as vibrant as the day they were printed. The print has been framed in a very fine quality cherry wood frame by Scottsdale’s premier framer, Framer’s Workshop, using UV glass and museum quality archival materials. The print is a fine impression with lacquer highlights in excellent condition. It is not album backed. Each panel measures about 13 1/2"V x 9 3/8"H. The upper and lower margins were slightly trimmed to fit into the album. The discoloration behind Saeki Urinaga is primarily a distortion from the photographic lighting.
