Pair of 19th century Chinese paper fans very finely and densely painted in extensive detail with figural scenes. One fan painting features beauties at a temple surrounded by clouds holding celestial maidens and a deer. A monkey is paying homage to a female who is seated on a lotus throne. The second fan painting depicts a scene with beauties engaged in various scholarly leisure activities. The fans date from the 19th century. They have been recently custom framed with archival materials against a celadon silk background. The frame itself is antiqued silver. The framed size of each painting is 14 3/4"V x 25"H. The paintings themselves measure about 9"V x 19 1/2"H. The paintings are in very good overall condition. They have signs of wear and minor soiling consistent with their age. The paintings are from the estate of Jane Culver Sargent of Brookline, MA. Her father-in-law, Porter Edward Sargent, developed the "Round the World School" which was offered to the elite youth of New England between 1909-1914.
